What is the 'Blur Faces' feature?

The facial obfuscation ‘blur faces’ feature is a key tool for projects with sensitive content or hard data privacy constraints as it blurs or blocks out respondent faces on videos and photos, ensuring privacy and anonymity.

How does it work?

Faces are visible, as normal while a participant take a photo or records a video for upload, or when you run and record a Live Interview.

The facial obfuscation occurs while the uploaded file is being processed, when it arrives on your Indeemo Dashboard.

Which Uploads can be blurred?

  • Videos and photos from the participant (Indeemo App and mobile web).
  • Imported files via Video Import.
  • Recorded Interviews via Indeemo Live Interviews.

How do I enable it?

The feature must be enabled on each target group in your project before any responses are added.

Once enabled, it cannot be disabled.

Best Practice Guidelines

To ensure the facial obfuscation feature works reliably, please communicate the following recording guidelines to your participants:

Ideal Recording Conditions for Reliable Blurring

  • Subject Focus (One Person): The blurring algorithm works best when there is only one face clearly visible on the screen.

  • Minimal Movement: The camera should be held as still as possible. Avoid videos or interviews that capture people moving dynamically in the background (e.g., public places, busy rooms).

  • Distance: The participant should be sitting or standing at arm's length from the camera, or no more than 1.5 meters (5 feet) away.

  • Centred Placement: The participant’s face should be centred in the camera frame and remain there throughout the recording.

Considerations for Your Project

The facial blurring is applied during the file's processing on the dashboard. For this reason, you will notice slightly extended processing time.

This means the file will be in a 'processing' state for a longer period than an un-blurred upload.

You will see a placeholder thumbnail for a few minutes while the blurring occurs.

Once the blurring process is complete, the file's correct thumbnail will appear, and all associated data generation (such as transcripts, translations, and OCR) will begin.
